Founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his followers, Salt Lake City, Utah has since evolved into a major economic and cultural focal point of the Midwest. Just as its’ name implies, the city has a major mining industry for its expansive salt flats. These plains are also the location of many land-speed records. Salt Lake is one of the major hubs of industrial banking, and is also home to the Huntsman Corporation, a Fortune 500 company. The city has been dubbed the “Crossroads of the West” for its’ expansive international airport and high economic output. As for leisure and entertainment, this region is world renowned for its outdoor recreation. It has some of the highest rates of tourism for its hiking and skiing industry – the 2002 Winter Olympic Games took place in the nearby mountains. Homes in Salt Lake City have seen steady increases in home values over the past years, though they sit slightly below the national average.
