Salt Lake City is the capital and most populous city in the state of Utah. It was founded in the mid 1800s by Mormon leader Brigham Young and his followers and since has seen significant growth. Today, the economy is driven primarily by a strong service industry, though it also is home to many large mining and oil firms as well. While the city is relatively small in comparison with other major cities around the country, it sees large seasonal tourism due to its location opposite the Wasatch and Unita mountains. This has provided opportunity for development of a large hiking and skiing industry – in fact, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games took place in Salt Lake City. As of recent, the city has taken this focus on the surrounding environment and focused on green initiatives, including the creation of a strong bicycle culture to promote the limitation of carbon emissions. Houses in Salt Lake City have seen recent upswings in average value, showing signs of recovery since the middle of the 2000s.
